About Dr. Eleanor Kellon, VMD PDF Print E-mail

“Hope is never gone until you choose to abandon it, and "Halfway measures get halfway results," are phrases frequently used by Dr. Eleanor Kellon, Co-owner of the Equine Cushings and Insulin Resistance Group. This group is now celebrating it's 10th Anniversary with a membership of 8000 and growing. Dr. Kellon is an invaluable resource for this group, educating and supporting horse owners every day.

An Honors Graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Kellon received special training at the University of Pennsylvania New Bolton Center in Large Animal Medicine and Surgery. Dr. Kellon is one of the few experts in the field of applications of nutraceuticals for horses and is an authority in the field of equine nutrition as well as matters pertaining to performance horses. She is a member of the Veterinary Advisory Board for Smart Pak Equine, Veterinary Editor for Horse Journal and John Lyons Perfect Horse, which have published many of her clinical trials. Dr. Kellon routinely writes four to six articles a month plus conducts field trials of equine products and supplements.

An established best-selling author, Dr. Kellon's books include The Older Horse, Keeping the Older Horse Young, Equine Drugs and Vaccines, Equine Supplements and Nutraceuticals and Dr. Kellon's Guide to First Aid for Horses. In the near future, Lyons Press, a division of Globe-Pequot, has recently published a compilation of Dr. Kellon’s nutrition articles from Horse Journal. The soon to be released textbook, Equine Podiatry includes a section on laminitis also written by Dr. Kellon. In addition, she will be updating Equine Supplements and Nutraceuticals (Breakthrough Publications), and an updated version of Keeping the Older Horse Young is in the works.

Throughout her career Dr. Kellon has had a strong interest in the impact of nutrition on health and performance. It was two Horse Journal field trials - one on magnesium supplementation effects in horses and ponies with cresty necks and laminitis (2000) and one on the effects of Vitex agnuscastus (Chastetree berry) in Cushing's horses (1999 - 2000) that got her interested in exploring options to better care for horses with Insulin Resistance and Cushing's Disease.
